our commitment to the environment

Taking care of our customers and the environment is important – it is a year-round commitment. Here are just a few ways we are working to protect our planet and serve your community.

green energy facility

In 2016, we introduced our new Green Energy Facility in New England. Using a natural process called “anaerobic digestion”, this 24,000 square foot facility converts food that is no longer edible into clean energy. This keeps waste out of the waste stream and produces over 3,300 megawatts of electricity, providing up to 40% of the energy needed to run our 1.1 million square-foot distribution center in Freetown, MA.

responsible retailing

responsible product promises

Protecting the planet means protecting our future. At Stop & Shop, we work with suppliers to obtain responsibly sourced products and are continuously looking for new ways to improve our processes.

Palm Oil: Stop & Shop is a member of Rountable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The RSPO aims to move towards an industry-wide approach to sustainable palm oil cultivation. Stop & Shop is working with suppliers to transition to sustainable palm oil in its store brand products.

Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa: We are always looking for ways to be environmentally and socially responsible. When a product wears the UTZ, Rainforest Alliance Certified ™, or Fair Trade label, you can rest assured that it was made with a few things in mind – better farming methods that can lead to fewer pesticides and better crops, better treatment for farmers, and a better environment.

A commitment to sustainability simply creates a better way of life for everyone. We’re proud to announce that all Stop & Shop brand coffee and tea products are UTZ certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified ™, or Fair Trade certified. As a retailer with the ability to make a difference, it’s a responsibility we’re happy to embrace. By shopping for products with the Rainforest Alliance Certified ™, Fair Trade, or UTZ certified logos, you support these social and environmental practices.

waste reduction

waste reduction

In 2016, we’ve diverted 84% of our waste to someplace other than a landfill – through donations, recycling or composting. Our goal is 80% by 2020!

Stop & Shop donates edible food to those in need – while also keeping food out of the landfills. Last year we turned extra food into over 5.4 million meals and donated over 2.5 million pounds* of meat for our local communities. (*calculation based on Feeding America's formula of $1.72/pound of food).

Watch the story on how donating food helps us reduce waste in New England and New York!

Recycling is also important. During 2016 we saved over 2 million trees by recycling cardboard. Each ton of recycled cardboard saves 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water.

reusable bag

make every bag count

In 2016 Stop & Shop, along with its sister companies achieved the goal of using 1 billion fewer bags in our stores! Since 2011, we have been committed to packing better bags and by doing so we used 1 billion fewer bags – enough bags to circle the Earth 7 times!

All of our stores also offer plastic bag recycling. Bring your plastic shopping bags to our stores and we’ll send them, plus all of our shrink wrap, to our plastics recycling company to become composite decking. To date, we’ve collected millions of pounds of bags for recycling.

We want to give a shout out to all customers who switched to reusable bags – making a positive impact on our communities and the environment. We couldn’t have done it without you! So let’s keep it going, and push even harder, to reach the next billion bag reduction!

solar panels on roof top

energy conservation

Energy conservation is an important step in maintaining a healthy planet. Over the past few years, we completed numerous energy saving projects, including installing solar panels on store roofs, converting stores to energy efficient LED lighting, and installing HVAC equipment controls that decrease electricity consumption. We also installed submetering in stores that helped us find places where we could be wasting energy. These projects have helped us reduce our energy use by over 70 million kilowatts annually. That has the same impact as removing 10,162 passenger vehicles from the road for one year!
