Community Supports Neighbors in Need this Holiday Season as NYC Food Pantries Experience Shortages

BROOKLYN, NY (December 13, 2014) – Peapod by Stop & Shop, the country’s leading online grocer which delivers to all of New York’s five boroughs, today donated $10,000 worth of groceries to the Recovery House of Worship (RHOW), a Brooklyn church that offers a variety of ministries to the community including a weekly food pantry. Together with several hundred Brooklyn community members, Peapod team members assembled 400 bags of groceries that included hearty and healthy non-perishables that will be delivered via the RHOW’s food pantry, which serves hundreds of food insecure community members each week.

The donation comes at a time when, according to the Food Bank for New York City, 80 percent of the city’s food pantries have experienced an increase in demand in the past year, resulting in widespread food shortages.*

“Supporting meaningful organizations in the communities in which we live and work is a priority for Peapod,” said Andrea Eldridge, Senior Vice President, Commercial East Markets, Peapod. “We’re proud to be partnering with the Recovery House of Worship and providing food essentials that will help put warm meals on the tables of food insecure families in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill neighborhood this holiday season.”

“The community members we serve rely on the food staples we provide each week through both the hot meals at our soup kitchen and our food pantry service,” said Pedro Rodriguez, celebrity chef and RHOW pastor. “Such a generous donation from Peapod – a company that knows the importance, value and power of good meals – will help us serve more than 400 people this holiday season.”

Celebrating 25 years as America’s leading grocer, Peapod recently expanded its service in the New York metro area and now operates in all five New York City boroughs.
