Stop & Shop clarifies cage-free egg stance: Based on available supply and market conditions, our goal is to be 100% cage free overall by 2022.

Animal welfare is an issue that we care about greatly and we believe that cage-free environments are a more humane way to treat hens. To get to 100% cage free eggs as quickly as possible, we have committed to have all of our private label shell eggs 100% cage-free by 2022, a much shorter timeframe than some other retailers and food service companies have announced. Today, private label constitutes 80% of our sales of shell eggs, so this is a very significant step forward.

We believe the announcement we made is the best way to persuade the egg industry to quickly start making the significant investments needed to go cage free. Based on available supply and market conditions, our goal is to be 100% cage free overall by 2022. As the first mainstream grocery retailer, we are proud to lead the industry in going to cage free and hope with our announcement that the entire grocery industry will go there with us.

Stop & Shop commits to sell only cage-free private label shell eggs

Transition to be complete by 2022

Purchase, NY and Quincy, MA (February 22, 2016) – As part of its responsible retailing efforts, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC today announced that its private label shell eggs will be 100% cage-free by 2022.

Stop & Shop now offers cage-free, free-range, organic, and traditional egg varieties for its customers. Approximately 80% of all eggs sold by Stop & Shop are sold as “Own Brands” or private label. Stop & Shop’s responsible retailing program promises customers healthy products and services that are sourced with respect for people, animals and the environment.

Ahold USA also announced the news with the following statements:

“Animal welfare is a fundamental part of our responsible retailing program,” said Marissa Nelson, senior vice president of responsible retailing and healthy living, Ahold USA. “We believe that cage-free environments are a more humane way to treat hens, and we have committed to have all of our private label shell eggs 100% cage-free, subject to available supply.”
