Stop & Shop Signs Long-Term Lease With Winthrop Nantucket

Plans Underway for a new Stop & Shop in Former Grand Union location

(Quincy, Mass.) March 20, 2013 - The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC announces today it has signed a long-term lease with Winthrop Nantucket to operate a Stop & Shop store in the former Grand Union location in downtown Nantucket at 9 Salem St., adjacent to the Nantucket Boat Basin.

Stop & Shop will begin work soon on a multi-million dollar renovation of the 12,145-square-foot building. The downtown Stop & Shop will offer an assortment of quality products and prepared foods to meet the needs of year-round islanders and summer visitors who shop in the downtown area.

"We are pleased to be opening a downtown Stop & Shop, continuing the operation of a grocery store there, and contributing to the revitalization of the area," said Joe Kelley, president, Stop & Shop New England Division. "The new store allows Stop & Shop to expand its offer of products and customer service to the island. Our decision was made after serious considerations about the location. Our Nantucket customers and a customer survey indicated to us that a downtown supermarket was essential. Our priority always has been the design and construction of a new store in the Mid Island. When the Grand Union closed and no supermarket company with the proven experience, infrastructure and resources to operate a successful year-round grocery store stepped forward, Stop & Shop reconsidered options in the downtown, and responded to that need.

"Stop & Shop looks forward to working closely with Nantucket officials and with members of the community to operate the finest store possible. Stop & Stop has been a long-term member of the Nantucket community, and we take our role seriously," Mr. Kelley added. "We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve this island, and we will do everything in our power to improve on that service."

"We were happy to work closely with Stop & Shop to ensure continuance of a grocery store in the downtown," said Peter Braverman of Winthrop Nantucket, the landlord. "Nantucket residents needed a supermarket in the downtown, and we are all pleased this has worked out. I'm sure that Stop & Shop will operate the finest store possible. We look forward to a long relationship with Stop & Shop."
