Stop & Shop Donates $40,000 to Four New York and NJ Food Banks to Provide Emergency Assistance During Federal Government Shutdown

Purchase, NY (January 25, 2019) – The government shutdown has found many federal workers facing food insecurity. Committed to the communities it serves, Stop & Shop has donated $40,000 equally among four of its partner food banks – Island Harvest, Long Island Cares, The Food Bank for New York City and The Community Food Bank of New Jersey – in support of those impacted by the furlough.

On January 17, Stop & Shop presented a check to Island Harvest at a press conference held at the Food Bank that highlighted local partners and their efforts to help those impacted on Long Island. In further support, Stop & Shop donated $10,000 in gift cards to its other partner in fighting hunger across Long Island, Long Island Cares, for immediate distribution to furloughed workers.

West of Long Island, Stop & Shop’s $10,000 donation supported a pop-up food pantry put on by The Food Bank for New York City. This mobilized pantry, which took place on January 22 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, provided food and essentials for approximately 500 families in the community who have been affected by the government shutdown. In addition to the check donation, Stop & Shop associates from the company’s Atlantic Avenue store donated their time and volunteered at the event.

Just over the New York border, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey also held a pop-up event on January 23 with the monetary and physical support of Stop & Shop. Outfitted with volunteers from Stop & Shop, the Food Bank handed out fresh produce and non-perishables at Newark airport, aiding impacted TSA, Customs and FAA workers.

“Our hardworking neighbors in the federal government should not have to worry about providing food for their families,” said Jennifer Brogan, Director of External Communications and Community Relations for Stop & Shop. “We are proud to be able assist our food bank partners in providing them with support during this challenging time.”
