Stop & Shop and its Customers Raise More Than A Half Million Dollars to Benefit JDRF and Type 1 Diabetes Research
Purchase, NY (March 4, 2019) –Stop & Shop and its customers raised more than a half million dollars to benefit JDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Stop & Shop customers supported the effort by purchasing one-dollar paper sneakers at checkout, enabling Stop & Shop to donate more than $502 thousand to JDRF. More than 1.25 million Americans live with T1D, an autoimmune disease that can strike at any time. It cannot be prevented, and, at present, there is no cure. More than 170 thousand with T1D are under the age of eighteen. Experts say that by 2050, the numbers will skyrocket to 5 million, of which 600 thousand will be under the age of eighteen. Each year more than forty thousand Americans are diagnosed with T1D.
“JDRF is thankful to Stop & Shop and to its customers for supporting our efforts,” said Amanda O’Neill, JDRF’s National Manager of Corporate Partnerships. “We are making great inroads in lessening the burden of type 1 diabetes until we find a cure, in large part because of the support of Stop & Shop and the generosity of its customers who are supporting us, one dollar at a time.”
In addition to utilizing the paper sneaker campaign to raise awareness for JDRF, children living with type 1 diabetes helped to educate the public by leading guided tours of their local Stop & Shop store aisles. The children demonstrated how a making educated food choice is one of the many ways they manage their type 1 diabetes. The children, their parents, JDRF representatives and Stop & Shop experts offered tips about what to look for when it comes to meals and snacks, including how much and what type of carbohydrate-based foods are best, quick meal ideas, healthy snack options and insight into the different resources and non-prescription T1D supplies that can be found in the pharmacy.
“The supermarket is so important to those living with Type 1 Diabetes as what we eat matters,” said Jennifer Brogan, Stop & Shop’s Director of External Communications and Community Relations. “Stop & Shop not only offers a vast assortment of fresh and healthy foods, but also has pharmacists trained and certified in diabetes care by the American Pharmacists' Association. This allows us to provide more personalized support to those living with Type 1 Diabetes.”
Stop & Shop has been partnering with JDRF since 1996. The company’s New York, New Jersey and Connecticut stores took part in the February 15 - March 1 awareness campaign.
