Stop & Shop Cares About Your Health!

A food recall is voluntary, initiated by a manufacturer or distributor to protect the public from products that may cause health problems or may be misbranded (incorrect labeling and/or packaging).

Types of Recalls

Class I - This is the most serious. Eating the food may cause health problems or even death.

Class II - This involves a potential health hazard where there is a remote probability of a health problem if the food is eaten.

Class III - This involves a situation where eating the product will not cause a health problem, but the product still is in violation of a Federal regulation.

Regarding the removal of chopped romaine lettuce on 4.16.18:

  • Stop & Shop is aware of the recent CDC advisory that noted chopped romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona, may be linked to some cases of E. coli illness nationally.
  • In an abundance of caution, Stop & Shop has voluntarily removed all products that might be impacted by this advisory from store shelves.
  • If customers purchased chopped romaine lettuce from Stop & Shop they should bring their purchase receipt to a Stop & Shop store for a full refund.
  • Food safety is our highest priority, and as we learn more from our suppliers or receive additional guidance from regulatory agencies, we will take appropriate action.
  • We encourage consumers to follow CDC guidance, including if consumers are unsure of the origin of a chopped romaine lettuce product, to avoid consuming it.
